Fiber College in the News

September 3, 2010 by Mary Jane 8 Comments

They said “you’ve got 3 takes”, so who worries about a script? Ahem…there is actually only one take. It is such a fun “small town” affair at Bangor’s WABI Tv…really nice people, why is it when the cameras turn on I freeze like a deer in the headlights…and exactly how many cameras are there, and where are they? I cringe seeing myself, want to dive under the table, even so, the whole thing was fun.

Luckily they edited the part where I picked lint off the host.

Sadly they edited the part where I described the class I want to take:

Elizabeth Green Musselman’s Knitting Our History class

“Let’s use our hands to explore the history of knitting. The craft of knitting has evolved in such fascinating ways over the centuries. In this class you will learn some historical knitting and proto-knitting techniques (for example, naalbinding, Guernsey patterning) and practice these techniques on a sampler hat. You will also receive a small packet of readings in advance of the course so that we can discuss knitting’s history together as we do our handwork.”

Knitting and history simultaneously, what could be better!

As you know I’ll be teaching Fair Isle Sock Project, where you can design your own or practice by making socks I designed just for Fiber College.

I’ll also be teaching a special Styling Your Handknits for Photography. In this fun class you’ll learn to how to develop your eye, so you can take the best pictures for various applications; project shots for Ravelry, storytelling shots for your blog, detail shots for self published patterns,  memory shots and mood shots for family and flickr. Train your eye to really see!

Sign up for Fiber College here.

Oh yes, there was also a nice little piece on Fiber College in our local online newspaper, The Village Soup.

That is the beach at Fiber College on the right, the weather is predicted to be perfect. See you there.

There was a moose in my yard!

I’ll be getting some more Scotland pictures up here I promise, but later today check on my flickr page I should have some up.

Castaway Tam

August 26, 2010 by Mary Jane 5 Comments

I’ve got a new pattern out, and I’m as surprised as you! What with my whirlwind summer, I almost forgot about this darling tam. Knit Picks has an independent designer program, and when they asked me to contribute I agreed. For one, they are the nicest people, I met them last winter when I was visiting out west, a cheerful and lively bunch, always generous with their yarn support too. My reasoning continues with the Target and H&M analogy, both have visiting designers and design houses contribute affordable fashion for the masses, take this summer, Liberty of London for Target and Sonia Rykiel for H&M. So, to the masses a big hello!

My Castaway Tam was inspired by late summer island picnics in Maine. A casual comfy hat to bring along, donning just as the sun goes down and there’s a slight chill in the air.

Find the pattern here at Knit Picks or here on Ravelry.

We just went on a especially fun picnic, where we collected the mother-load of sea urchin shells, and I taught two French teenagers how to knit!

More Scotland coming up!
Fiber College -September 9-11 read Astrig’s post and this year’s teacher interviews.
Squam Art Fair -September 19 -something new!

Surfing

July 30, 2010 by Mary Jane 9 Comments

I’m on the bus headed for Logan Airport, surfing the net – WiFi on the bus! This makes me feel giddy and all space-age, like Judy Jetson. I’m off on my Shetland-Scotland adventure and realize I haven’t posted enough about Peru.

I share surfing in Huanchaco. Every evening around sunset you can watch fishermen surf to the shore in their reed boats. While here at this beach resort, it may be a bit of a show for tourists, when my husband was on his rugged surfing adventure, he met fishermen who still use these boats for fishing, with plentiful catches. You can see by the bas relief above, they’ve been at it a loooooong time.

Notice the diamond “net” pattern on the left…found frequently in knitting stitch patterns.
