I’m on the bus headed for Logan Airport, surfing the net – WiFi on the bus! This makes me feel giddy and all space-age, like Judy Jetson. I’m off on my Shetland-Scotland adventure and realize I haven’t posted enough about Peru.
I share surfing in Huanchaco. Every evening around sunset you can watch fishermen surf to the shore in their reed boats. While here at this beach resort, it may be a bit of a show for tourists, when my husband was on his rugged surfing adventure, he met fishermen who still use these boats for fishing, with plentiful catches. You can see by the bas relief above, they’ve been at it a loooooong time.
Notice the diamond “net” pattern on the left…found frequently in knitting stitch patterns.

Are you going to Shetland too? Have you been there before?
Is this an organized thing, or are you going it alone?
Just wondering — love Shetland.

I’m in Shetland on my own but not, Gudrun Johnston kindly invited me. We’re staying in a quaint croft house. It is unbelievably perfect. I’ll be doing research in the Museums, but today I’m just soaking it all in- so beautiful.

Love the bas relief and the modern day fisherman together. Who is on top, monkeys with hats?
mjmucklestone says
I don’t know, on the one hand, the tri-tassel of their hats looks familiar, like on chullos, only there are more in front…hmmm, where is our expert Peruvian anthropologist-archeologist?

MJ, having just loged on to Twisted Collective..there was your very wondeful article about Peru..you brought back memories of my trip with Cynthia, she expose us to so many wonderful adventures of Peru..leaving a marked memory of history and giving us an experience of how people pass on treasure of yesterday..I was knitting on a lace inset for a sweater..wheb I soon found myself suround by the ladies watching me..we were having lunch..nex I was ask to share..behold they were counting my pattern..they learn by rote..
Now there you are in another on of my haunts..I loved the Shetlands, tell stories about the island all the time..enjoy..that was some 9/10 years ago..

I’d never gone anywhere with a group before, so I was a little nervous being a very independent budget traveler. But the whole experience was fantastic. I went with my mom, which made things extra special. Then like you said, Cynthia is simply THE BEST one to go with if knitting is your thing. I can’t say enough great things about her and the trip. The other members of our group were fantastic too, really nice people.
Patricia Dixon says
whoops, forgot to mention..if you ever plan to go to Turkey..go with Cynthia
mjmucklestone says
Ha! Don’t think I haven’t already planned to go to Turkey…all that sock knitting!

Love the photo. On the right, I think I can see musicians with guitars in the design. I hope you had a good time in Scotland. I was sorry to have to miss the trip, but I had to be with my family in Canada during this time. Thanks for sharing the photos.
