Travels: Bergen Norway

January 6, 2015 by Mary Jane 6 Comments

We had a breathtakingly beautiful arrival as we sailed into Bergen Norway, misty and wonderful. It was our first stop on the Craft Cruises Trans-Atlantic Knitting Cruise last summer.

2_Bergen

There is lots to see and do in this gorgeous little gem of a city.

3_Bergen (3) 3_Bergen (2) 3_Bergen 1

Adventures abound around every winding corner, charming tiny houses often with lace curtains, a bustling fish market and fine shops.

3_Bergen (1)

The highlight of our visit for me was a visit to the Oleana Factory. I’ve loved this Norwegian brand since their very beginning. My mom picked up a sweater in Norway way back in the early 90’s, and I used to keep the tiny 3 x 3 inch catalog she brought home next to my bed, for inspiration before I went to sleep.

The idea for Oleana began over tea. Alarmed that most production of Norwegian textiles was moving out of the country, three friends and colleagues, decided to start a company of their own. Their backgrounds: a knitter, an economist and a textile engineer. This was a bit of a dangerous undertaking in the 90s.

5_Bergen

Oleana wasn’t only interested in keeping the textile industry alive in Norway, they wanted to produce some of the most beautiful knitwear in the world, with a commitment to fine, progressive design. Oleana combines a fresh modern look with design traditions of the past.

6_Bergen

Their first hire was Solveig Hisdal, an amazing artist trained in fashion design. Her process begins with sketches, so beautiful they are worthy of framing all on their own!

Solveig remains the sole designer and is responsible for the entire look, including styling and location scouting for photoshoots and all the photography! She even produced a model. Oleana’s first model was Solvieg’s daughter and to this day all of their models are relatives of the owners or employees.

Solveig Hisdal has been the winner of “The Award for Design Excellence” by the Norwegian Design Council six times! In 2001 she was awarded Norway’s top prize for design, architecture and handicrafts, the Jacobprisen from Norsk Form.

7_Bergen

The factory itself, situated on an exquisite fjord about a half hour outside of Bergen is a thing of beauty! Like no factory I’d ever visited – fresh and clean, modern and inspiring!

Co-Owner Signe Aarhus, the textile engineer mentioned, (above right) showed us around and shared the Oleana story.

14_Bergen

Eye candy everywhere.

11_Bergen

What an exhilarating treat our visit was!

15_Bergen

Notice the views!

10_Bergen

Precision work, committed employees…

13_Bergen

…with a sense of humor!

3_Bergen

Yarn bombing shows the way!

If you’d like to visit, there’s another North Atlantic Craft KnittingCruise next summer with awesome Gwen Bortner. Make sure you let Mel know I sent you!

To learn more about Oleana, you should really get a copy of their gorgeous book, Oleana From dream to fairytale reality…I got mine at the factory and don’t see it on their website, so you might write to them to inquire, it is absolutely stunning!

I was a lucky girl this past year. One of the wonderful opportunities I had was teaching on a Craft Cruise.
We sailed across the North Atlantic!

Copenhagen was the launching off spot.

I hadn’t been there since I was a teenager. It was so beautiful, absolutely delightful!

Copenhagen3

I don’t know why I was so surprised.

Copenhagen4

I could imagine living there.

Copenhagen5

My friends would visit, like Sandy and my mom.

Copenhagen6

I would have a bike.

South America Bound!

And you can come too!

April 25 – May 1 will find me winging my way to Argentina with Behind the Scenes Adventures.

Textile Guru Cynthia Le Count Samake and I will be joined by Buenos Aries local – and international knitting star – Joji Locatelli! Squee!

Highlights of the trip will include fantastic BA – Buenos Aries, a gorgeous city of architecture, art, parks, street markets, tango and even a YARN DISTRICT! It will be fall time, so we’ll still be itching for yarn! With Joji we’ll take a ferry across the the Rio Plata to Montevideo, the capitol of Uruguay where we’ll visit the dye studio and factory shop of Malabrigo! Swoon! Montevideo is also home to 3 of Manos del Uruguay‘s retail shops where they sell finished goods as well as yarn. In the countryside we’ll journey to a Manos cooperative.

Colonia de Sacrameto has been on my bucket list for a long time, and it will be our final stop in Uruguay. The historic quarter, where we’ll be staying is a Unesco World Heritage Site. We’ll have a leisurely couple of days to enjoy the quaint tranquil streets and enjoy some knitting in one of the lovely cafes.

Back across the river in Argentina we’ll travel to an estansia, a traditional ranch, though hardly rustic, where we’ll relax in the pastoral surroundings.  Joji will treat us to a trunk show and also knit with us – sharing a pattern she’s designed just for our group. She’s also persuaded her good friend and indy dyer Ale, to lead a dying workshop for us.

The trip will wind down back in Buenos Aries with a farewell dinner and Tango show!

Care to join us?

Introducing Fish Mitts!!!

December 1, 2014 by Mary Jane 3 Comments

FishMitts.1

These were designed for a fantastic knitting retreat sponsored by The Net Loft, in Cordova Alaska. It was one of the most memorable experiences in my life,  If you ever ever get the chance, you have to go to No Road Cordova, where the fish is fresh, the scenery spectacular and the people are fantastic – creative, warm and welcoming! You can see some my the pictures here…that water I’m diving into is  Crater Lake, an alpine bowl with crystal clear freezing water. Wonderful!

The famous indescribably delicious Copper River Salmon come from Cordova and so these mitts are covered with fish, a school of them swimming upstream!

My opinion of fingerless mitts was once much like my early opinion of cowls, I just didn’t understand them, like why wouldn’t you want fingers? I’ve come to find out just how useful they are, especially living in a place like Maine, and living in old drafty houses. It is nice to have free fingers, so you can use them – indoors and out! Plus – they’re cute. So there.
FishMitts.4

I used yarn by local Cordovan talent (and new mommy) Shelly Kocan, dyer for The Net Loft’s own Snow Capped Yarns; Old Salt Collection – Egg Island Fingering. The rich dark blue of the water is called “Stormy Seas” and the green fish are in “Sea Change”.

FishMitts.2

And because I can, I made them in a different colorway too. And larger. Just by using thicker yarn you get a different size. The pair above uses 2ply jumper weight in Jamieson and Smith’s newly reintroduced minty color #71, the color of lobster boat trim and a sheepy grey #21. They just matched the driftwood I found on the beach!

So hurry on over to Ravelry today and get fishing!

Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival Review

May 31, 2014 by Mary Jane 4 Comments

Where else have I been spending my time? Kentucky! The Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival in Lexington. Yes indeed. What a great place to visit in the springtime, and what a wonderful, manegable and personal event. I struggled over that last adjetive… but personal seems right, or close to it. It is an intimate affair, very local, with everyone seeming to know one another. Friendly and welcoming too – inclusive, like we were all in on some special secret!

The event attracts amazing teachers, I again wished I could be taking classes as well as teaching them! Natural dying guru Dagmar Klos, author of The Dyer’s Companion, taught one class using marigolds and another with indigo. Someday I’ll be in one of her classes.

Anne Hanson! Hello! Elegant! She’s got her own line of yarn now – Bare Naked Yarns, all natural sheep colors – I was so lucky lucky lucky to get some – I’ll tell you more about that in another post . Anne taught her amazing Sweater Fitness class as well as beginning lace.

There were spinning and fiber prep classes from Constance Hall, Stephanie Stratton and Jessica Faulhaber. Martha Richards covered Ridgid Heddle weaving and Knitting with Handpainted Yarns. I’m so happy that weaving classes are making a comeback. Nicola Brown had some really creative Felting Classes while Sara Dunham covered Blogging with a side of Photograhy. That’s not all – Soapmaking! Yes Sara Hood taught Learn to Make Goat’s Milk Soap.

Katie Starzman and her sister Laura Poulette were there with Katie’s new book The Knitted Slipper Book fresh off the press and with all the samples. I got the book, why didn’t I take a picture? A darling an delightful duo – follow their adventures on their blog. Creative fun and festive!

I succumbed to buying yarn…how could I not? It had my name on it! The marketplace is stuffed with interesting local products you just don’t see anywhere else!

As usual for teaching I brought along all of the swatches from my books. A student brought a Burra Bear all the way from Shetland, who was quickly camouflaged amongst them. He was so at home, I hoped he’d hop in my bags. It is time I got one of my own. Burra Bears are one of the great souvenirs from the islands, don’t return home without one!

My students were stellar! So nice! So friendly, they told me all about the area and about themselves. I was invited to the Farm to Table dinner, put on by the local culinary school and an important addition to the festival, held shortly after my classes…but my students let me know that I had time to catch The Preakness, to see if California Chrome would win again… and he did! Now the Belmont for the triple crown! Horse Racing. Who knew I would care. But I do. It is infectious! I’ll be watching – and drinking Kentucky Bourbon – Saturday June 7th.

Kentucky (6) Kentucky (8)

As if the Fiber Festival wasn’t enough to lure you to Kentucky, the same weekend the quaint village of Midway has Francisco’s Farm Arts Festival I drove out to see it but got there too late after teaching but the drive and darling town were worth it all on their own.
Kentucky also boasts a Bourbon Trail, so you might just end up spending a week! Or more.

And as I mentioned … HORSES. Serious Horse country. THE Horse country. Spectacular scenery, all smooth rolling green hills, with white fences and black barns. And it is interesting terrain, for me anyway. You know I like to hike up hills, to get to the top. Well here, you hike down, to cool moody riverbeds… I didn’t have a chance this time but you bet I’m going to come back.

Kentucky__H (1)

My last evening I was in for a treat, as I got to stay at the farm of my thoughtful and caring host Dianne MacDonald. You might know her from her blog Sheep Dreams. What a dreamy location she and her husband have for their Tanglewood Farm, in the wee burg of Nonesuch. Beauty in every direction, and oh so many darling sheep!
