Hello Again.
Please enjoy this tease of a real Bohus sweater that exists in the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle. Last summer I was able to take a peek at some of their archives, thanks to a generous and dedicated staff, especially textile exert Karin.
Many apologies for being so absent. I’m in Seattle, where I grew up, for an extended stay. My parents are in their 80’s and I want to spend some time with them now that my schedule is more flexible. Which really means now that my kids are grown and on their own.
Not entirely. My son was in a dreadful accident, which involved his teeth. He had to be flown up here for all kinds of frightening and painful procedures and surgery. He’s fine. He has both eyes and nothing happened to his brain. Things could have been much worse.
As a result I’ve neglected some things. But…here comes another excuse. My laptop was on the blink, in particular my photo-editing program. Luckily Apple has a store here in Seattle and now I’m best friends with it. I’ve been there 3 times so far, which takes up most of the day since getting there involves bus rides or borrowing a car or both. I think the various “problems” are solved…but the final step is throwing away the photo-library that still exists on my laptop. It also exists on an external hard drive, so I should be fine. If I don’t throw away the one on this laptop, my computer will continue to be waaaaaaay slow, and I won’t be able to add any new photos…that’s how clogged up it is…still I’m terrified. I feel like I should make some more copies of the library…except it wasn’t an easy thing to do. My poor laptop had to spend several nights at the Apple hospital…some corrupted files prohibited me from doing it on my own, though I tried and tried.
I’ve also been spending many unhappy hours talking to the insurance company, and getting emergency room documents faxed here and there trying to prove that the accident was not a “pre-existing condition …whatever…there is more but why bother… it is an endlessly confusing tale that continues.
Did I mention that my phone broke in the middle of all this?
Lordy that was boring for you, sorry. I’m still a bit overwrought. I feel like I could sleep for a week…or maybe the whole winter like a polar bear. Only they don’t really hibernate, so I won’t either…I’ll try walking hibernation, like they do, where I’ll just conserve energy.

I was wondering how your son was. I’m glad his brain and his eyes are ok!!

I wonder what is going on. I’ve heard so many crazy, BIG, life changing events happening to so many people in the last few months. Two of my sisters each had one last week. Keep that upper lip stiff, soldier on and OH, remember how soothing knitting can be. I lived in Seattle before moving here and loved it. I hope everything that is happening to you smooths out with the New Year! XXX

Take care of yourself first, because if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else.
Big hugs, have a great Christmas and holiday season!

Oh, sweetpea. So sorry to hear life is uphill at the moment and very relieved to hear that (although teeth are vital!) nothing essential was damaged. Take care of yourself. Wishing you a peaceful festive season and some good family times!

Dang, girl!
It really is amazing how fragile and yet resilient we humans are.
I thought of you today, as I almost drove my car into the wall of a parking garage. I was mesmerized by a particularly lovely sweater, and forgot to pay any attention to my actual driving.

Oh my gosh, I’m so glad your son is okay. It sounds like things have been rough, which I’m sorry to hear about, but glad to hear you seem to be coming out the other end basically alright. Lots of hugs for you.

Sounds to me that it all has taken buckets of energy, but happy to read that life is getting back on the right track for you. Often thinking of the lunch in Lerwick. XXX

I’m so sorry! Believe it or not, I’ve been there as family for the aging parents and the kid who went through the accident and needs multiple dental surgeries. (Eyes and brain tested ok in our world, too, thank God.) I’m sorry I’m not the only one. Please give yourself permission to laugh when you can, cry when you can’t laugh, and take a little “me” time when you’re exasperated or desperate. Family is everything. The rest of it really can wait. Best wishes.

So sorry to hear of all these problems going on but thankful your son is all right and will recover. Love the sweater detail pic from the museum. May you have joy in this season apart from any worldly problems, and start out the new year fresh and revived. You have a great audience looking to see what you will come up with! Best wishes.

Oh MJ, I’m so sorry! I’m glad your son is ok, wish I could do something for you. Let me know if I can help. Sorry about your laptop too, geez.
The sweater is beautiful; reminds me of when Marcia and I knit our Bohus sweaters together! 🙂

Admittedly you don’t have it with you, but when you get back to the external hard drive, can’t you copy the photo library from it? I recommend using a flash drive, or several – they are strong if not abused and can be stored in tiny places, such as safety deposit boxes, a corner of your luggage, etc. I’m not sure of the ethics of starting a limited-membership Yahoo group (or equivalent) to store your photo library online, but possibly you could create a password protected Facebook photo album (I think that’s possible).
Good health and safe driving to all!

Wow, Mary Jane! I was so sorry to learn about your son’s accident – but glad he is on the mend. Family is the most important thing in our lives. I think back to our dinner at IK Knitting Lab, and am so happy that we got to spend that time together. Hope 2012 will be a healthy and happy year for you and your family!
